Leadership Educators Advising Peers

L.E.A.P. is:

The LEAP program is comprised of a group of committed Rensselaer students who are trained in leadership education and workshop facilitation. LEAP trainers will hold workshops each semester for individual students and student organization leaders to work on their team dynamics.

What LEAP Trainers Do:

  • Each LEAP trainer is required to attend four (4) sessions focused on building facilitation, public speaking and needs analysis skills. Dates for these sessions will be set at the beginning of the semester.
  • Each LEAP trainer will be mentored by professional facilitator in the Archer Center for Student Leadership Development.
  • LEAP trainers will hold workshops for fellow students and students organizations on teambuilding, communication, public speaking and goal setting (approximately 2/semester).

LEAP Trainers will be trained in:

  • Leading groups of students through various leadership based exorcises
  • How to manage large groups of people with various backgrounds and needs
  • Personal public speaking skills
  • Current teaching and learning theory
  • Active learning tools and techniques
  • Conflict management and facilitation techniques
  • Team development theory and techniques

Requirements:

  • Recommended cummalative GPA of 2.8. If your GPA does not meet this requirement, a comments section has been provided on the application to address this issue.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A desire to learn and apply leadership theory
  • All majors and class years welcome

Time Commitment:

First-time LEAP trainers can expect to spend roughly 15 hours a semester dedicated to learning facilitation skills and associated theories. Another 15 hours will be dedicated to facilitating workshops for their fellow students. The total time commitment is approximately 30 hours per semester.
