Student Experiences

PLP Retreat

Each new PLP class participates in an off-campus retreat at the beginning of the program. This day-long excursion stresses teamwork and cooperation, encouraging individual students to become part of a cohesive unit. During the retreat they will participate in an Outdoor Adventure Program at a professional ropes course. Other activities include team-building exercises to encourage thinking in new, creative ways and cultivate out-of-the-ordinary approaches to problem solving. The relationships formed during this weekend will be strengthened and built upon throughout the coming year. Most importantly, the retreat encourages evaluation of goal and values. Self-assessment is a vital component of the PLP. By the end of the program year, participants achieve deeper understandings of who they are, how they have arrived at this significant juncture in their lives, and where they might go from here.

Student Quotes
  • I have found the Professional Leadership Program to be a very valuable experience. The skills and challenges associated with being a leader are addressed in a way that allows a great deal of interaction with other members of the class. I have learned a great deal in the areas of communication, motivation, delegation and others from not only the facilitator of the course, but the corporate guests and other students as well. Many of them have shared in a multitude of leadership positions which only helps in adding value to the course. Hands-on activities show first hand how to execute and develop many of the characteristics of a leader. Interactions with both corporate guest and other students helped me to broaden these skills and others to help me in becoming a more effective leader. I have found that the skills I have developed can be applied to every aspect of my professional and personal life. The Professional Leadership Program prepares you for success. Judd Rattner, Class of 2006, Electrical Engineering & Management

  • “I learned that the only way to lead is to listen and be vocal as well.”

  • “We all seemed to feed off each other's energy, that we all seemed to grow together and become the being that is PLP. Not a frog, or elephant, or even a platypus. We have become a giraffe. Always looking, reaching upwards, with our own spots of diversity, with our legged quadruped of stability.”
